Assalamu alaykum warahmatullah everyone.

Alhamdulillah, we have completed our foundations of Arabic Calligraphy in the Ruq’ah script. The Arabic Calligraphy Intensive weekend may be over, but is only the beginning of your study of Arabic Calligraphy.

In all craft that require mastery, you would need guidance and a syllabus to follow. As humans we thrive with proper structure and form, as it helps us in our discipline. An essential part of training in Islamic calligraphy as in the saying of the famous companion of prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Sayyiduna Ali RA,

“الخط مخفي في تعليم الأستاذ وقوامه في كثرة المشق ودوامه على دين الإسلام”

“Calligraphy / writing is hidden in the teachings of the Ustadh and it’s strength lies in lots of practice.”

Another saying attributed to Sayyiduna Ali R.A:

“أكرموا أولادكم بالكتابة، فإن الكتابة من أهم الأمور ومن أعظم السرور”

“Teach your children to write, for it is of the most important matters and brings great joy.”

In our tradition, writing instruction is held as both a responsibility and a source of joy. You now have the foundations needed to continue into the traditional syllabus of Mehmet İzzet Efendi. You will receive the Kurrāsah / copybook, which will become your guide for the next stage of your practice.

From here, progress depends increasingly on your own consistency. The more carefully you observe, practise, compare and correct your work, the more your hand will begin to understand the script.

I will continue to provide corrections and guidance through weekly mashq for those who wish to continue, inshaAllah.

It is also said:

تعلم قوام الخط ياذا التأدب
“Learn the essence/foundation of handwriting, O owner of refinement/etiquette”.
“For handwriting is but the adornment of the refined/cultured person”.
“So if you possess wealth, your handwriting is an ornament/beauty”.
“And if you possess poverty, it is the best acquisition/gain”.

Price

The suggested contribution is R200 per month, but if this is not affordable for you, please contribute what you can. If you are unable to contribute financially, your contribution can be your weekly mashq and commitment to practice.

The aim is not simply to finish a course. The aim is to become a student and practitioner of the great Islamic heritage – khatt al arabiy.
